Acme Hotel Company Chicago
We selected this hotel for its refusal to play it safe: Acme Hotel Company took...
Park Hyatt Chicago opened in 1980 as the first hotel to carry the Park Hyatt name, a concept credited to Hyatt founder Jay Pritzker, at this same Michigan Avenue address overlooking the Water Tower. More than four decades later, the property remains the brand's founding reference point rather than one outpost among many, and a 2022 renovation treated that history as something to protect rather than modernize past recognition. The scope was significant, a reported 60 million dollars across guestrooms and public spaces, but the stated goal throughout was keeping the original idea of understated luxury intact.
We chose this hotel because its renovation resisted the easy move of making a historic flagship look louder to justify the spend. Anderson/Miller Ltd. redesigned the guestrooms around soft cream tones, camel accents, and layered textures meant to feel residential rather than showy, while Sheedy DeLaRosa Interiors, a woman-led Chicago firm, curated art and photography from local artists, including a custom woven-metal sculpture by Eric Gushee. The result reads as restraint used deliberately, in a category where restraint is often the harder and more expensive choice.
The hotel sits at 800 North Michigan Avenue, directly across from the Water Tower and inside the busiest stretch of the Magnificent Mile, with Lake Michigan a short walk east. It is as central an address as the Mile offers, equally useful for a day of flagship shopping, an evening at NoMI's rooftop-adjacent terrace, or a walk to the lakefront, without needing to leave the immediate neighborhood for any of it.

Public spaces were updated with neutral tones and white marble accents chosen specifically to set off the art rather than compete with it, and the lobby and library lounge were refreshed without being reinvented from scratch. The approach let the hotel add new suite categories and modernize its infrastructure while keeping the original sense of a quiet, residential retreat in the middle of the Mile's busiest blocks, rather than converting the lobby into another photogenic social space built primarily for people who are not staying there.
NoMI, named for its North Michigan Avenue address, splits into three distinct spaces rather than one restaurant trying to serve every occasion. NoMI Kitchen serves modern American food built on French technique, including duck confit and duroc pork rillette, under Executive Chef Terence Zubieta; NoMI Lounge centers on a large bar with a six-seat sushi counter; and NoMI Garden is an open-air terrace known for cocktails like the Humboldt Crush. All three share the same view of the Water Tower and the lake, so the choice between them comes down to mood rather than the window.
Guestrooms rely on triple-pane windows to cut down on Michigan Avenue's street noise and keep interior temperatures steady, a detail easy to miss until a guest notices how quiet the room is four floors above one of the city's busiest shopping streets. Bathrooms use retractable doors and an oversized soaking tub positioned for city views, finished with Le Labo products rather than a generic amenity line, and an integrated media hub handles service requests and in-room dining without requiring a phone call.
