Acme Hotel Company Chicago

From the corner of Chestnut and Rush, 20 East Chestnut reads less like a hotel than a ship's bow pushed into traffic. French architect Jean-Paul Viguier set the Sofitel's south face on a knife's edge, a 33-foot glass overhang that slices the block and catches the late sun the way Chicago rarely lets a building do. It opened in 2002 as the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower, and the American Institute of Architects later put it on a shortlist of the country's favorite buildings — not bad for a hotel one block off Michigan Avenue. Thirty-three floors, 415 rooms, and a lobby that still feels like it was designed by someone who cared more about light than logos.
We kept coming back to three things. The building itself, which nobody mistakes for another glass box on the Mile. A French operator that treats a Tuesday in Chicago with the same polish as a Paris weekend, from the turndown to the way the front desk actually pronounces your name. And a location two minutes off the Magnificent Mile that still lets you sleep without a tour bus idling outside. Rooms run efficient rather than sprawling, but they are cut with the same restraint as the façade: pale oak, a proper soaking tub, floor-to-ceiling glass that makes even a standard king feel like a corner room.
Chestnut Street sits in the Gold Coast, the residential pocket just west of the Magnificent Mile's retail crush. Michigan Avenue's flagship stores are a six-minute walk east, the Water Tower itself is visible from the upper floors, and Oak Street Beach is a flat ten-minute walk north for a lake swim before breakfast. The Loop's museums and theaters are an easy fifteen minutes south along Michigan Avenue, and the Museum of Contemporary Art is closer still. It is near enough to the shopping to use it, far enough not to hear it.

The rooms are where the French ownership shows up in details rather than décor: bath amenities that are not an afterthought, a soaking tub deep enough to actually use, and a largely glass wall that turns the skyline into the room's only artwork. Corner rooms and suites on the higher floors pick up the lake to the east and the Gold Coast rooftops to the west — ask for a high floor on the Chestnut side if the view matters more than the square footage, since standard rooms on lower floors look mostly onto neighboring buildings.
CDA, the hotel's ground-floor restaurant, has outlasted a couple of name changes — it opened as Café des Architectes — without losing the brasserie instinct: steak frites, a serious wine list, and a room built around the same glass the lobby uses to borrow daylight. It draws a local lunch crowd, not just hotel guests, which is usually the better sign that a hotel restaurant is worth the detour rather than just the convenience.
The Sofitel suits a city stay more than a lazy one: there is no pool deck to linger on, and the energy here is Michigan Avenue's, just one quiet block removed. Families traveling with a stroller or a dog will find both welcomed, and business travelers get a proper desk and real meeting space without the convention-hotel scale of the bigger towers nearby. Book a high floor if the view is the point, and keep in mind the Mile's crowds are close but never underfoot.
