Pendry Chicago
We loved the audacity of putting a design-forward hotel inside a building nicknamed the art...
Sophy takes its name from the Greek word for wisdom, a deliberate nod to the neighborhood it sits in rather than a marketing flourish. Hyde Park has been the University of Chicago's home for more than a century, and the hotel's architecture and interiors, designed by GREC Architects and Stonehill Taylor respectively, were built to answer that legacy rather than ignore it. The 98-room hotel opened as the first boutique property on Chicago's South Side, a distinction that still matters in a city where most design-led hotels cluster downtown. The result reads less like a chain property wearing local references and more like a building that could only exist in this neighborhood.
What earns this hotel its place is how deliberately local the details stay. Each room is anchored by an eight-foot abstract fabric painting from Chicago artist Joey Korom, and a record player stocked with vinyl from local musicians replaces the usual Bluetooth speaker as a gesture that actually means something here. The lobby's 15-foot double-sided fireplace links reception to Mesler, the restaurant and bar, instead of separating the two. Built to four-diamond standards and aiming for LEED Silver certification, Sophy backs its design ambitions with a 9.2 rating across more than 400 reviews.
Hyde Park trades downtown density for a genuinely residential, academic setting around the University of Chicago's quads, with the Museum of Science and Industry, housed in the last surviving building from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, a short walk away. Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House sits within the same radius, as does the site of the future Barack Obama Presidential Center. The Loop and Magnificent Mile are a straightforward ride north, but Hyde Park gives travelers a version of Chicago built around ideas and institutions rather than shopping, a genuine alternative rather than a compromise.

Mesler takes its name from the idea of mixing and mingling, a nod to Hyde Park's long-standing diversity, and structures the day accordingly: brunch runs seven days a week in place of separate breakfast and lunch service, a Hyde Park Social hour runs mid-afternoon, and dinner and a late-night lounge menu follow. Executive chef Bradford Shovlin, previously of the Michelin-starred North Pond, builds a cocktail list around Hyde Park's history in art, mathematics, science and astronomy. Artwork from students at nearby Hyde Park Academy High School lines the dining room, keeping the restaurant's local ties visible rather than symbolic.
Across 98 rooms, the design leans on Hyde Park's fine arts heritage rather than generic hotel neutrality: hardwood floors, area rugs and custom lighting frame an eight-foot abstract painting by Joey Korom in every room, alongside a curated selection of books and a record player stocked with local vinyl. Suite categories, the Novel, the Dorchester and the Opus, scale up the same formula with more space rather than a different design language. It is a rare case of a boutique hotel's in-room amenities doubling as a genuine introduction to the neighborhood outside.
